Introduction（緒言）の役割は、報告する研究の背景を説明し、その目的を明らかにすることです。
ICMJEのRecommendationsでは、Introductionについて、下記の通り記載されています。
❝Provide a context or background for the study (that is, the nature of the problem and its significance). State the specific purpose or research objective of, or hypothesis tested by, the study or observation. Cite only directly pertinent references, and do not include data or conclusions from the work being reported.❞
【要訳】
研究の内容や背景（すなわち、問題提起とその重要性）について説明する。実験または観察の具体的な目的や研究目標、または検証した仮説について述べる。文献は直接関連のあるもののみ引用する。また、本論文で報告する研究のデータや結論を含めないこと。
Introductionでは、下記の3段階の構成で、冗長にならないよう簡潔にまとめると効果的です。
✅ Step 1: What we know （すでに知られているエビデンス・背景）
✅ Step 2: What we do not know （未だ解明されていない領域・問題点）
✅ Step 3: Why the study was done （研究の目的）
